My Story

About Bemilda Linda Baltodano (Artist Name: Bem's)

Born in Managua, Nicaragua, I have always been drawn to the beauty and power of the ocean. Growing up at my grandparents' hotel in Masachapa Beach, I remember waking up to the sound of the waves crashing just miles from the shore. This connection to the ocean has shaped my life and art, becoming the foundation for my creative journey.

I began studying art in San Diego, California, where I attended Southwest High School and later received a paid scholarship to study commercial advertising art. My career in art started in commercial design, where I created logos and advertising concepts for companies like No Fear, 8 Ball-Snowboard, Church's Chicken, and Shorebreak. Over the years, my artistic journey has earned me recognition, including the United States Achievement Academy Award in the field of Art and the Bank of America Achievement Award.

While commercial art brought me success, my true inspiration comes from the ocean and its inhabitants. As a former surfer, I have a deep love for the water, and this passion grew as I began to understand the growing threats to our oceans. My art now reflects the resilience of marine life, and I am committed to raising awareness about the environmental challenges our oceans face.

In addition to my work as an ocean artist, I proudly serve as the president of the East County Art Association eastcountyart.org. I am dedicated to serving my community and enhancing the appreciation for art as a way to cope with life’s challenges. Through my collaborations with organizations like Go Surf and The Surfrider Foundation, I have worked on murals, festivals, and fundraising events focused on beach cleanup and ocean conservation.

My art is not just an expression of love for the ocean but also a call to action. I believe that through creativity, we can inspire change and protect the oceans for future generations.
